One of Dürer’s most recognizable prints is of the Indian rhinoceros. Several versions can be seen in the British Museum’s collection as well as the National Gallery of Art in D.C. It is quite astonishing how realistic the animal appears despite the fact that Dürer had never seen one in real life, but based his woodcut on a sketch that arrived from Lisbon in 1515 by an unknown artist. ⁣⁣

Albrecht Dürer was born on this day in 1471 in Nuremberg. He is known today as a great painter and printer and many of his works can be found in illustrious museums across the globe. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The most well-know patron of Dürer was the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian I. He served in Maximilian’s court from 1512 until 1519, when Maximilian died. His most ambitious project during this time was the Triumphal Arch, a massive print comprised of 36 sheets from 195 woodblocks. It is one of the largest prints ever made. It was commissioned by Maximilian as part of his visual program to exalt his lineage and secure his legacy. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ He is one of the greatest figures to emerge from the Renaissance. #HBD
